The Largest Stadiums on Earth

The largest stadium in the world is Rio de Janeiro’s Maracanã , named after the zone in Rio where it was built and accommodating more than 200,000 spectators. Workers took only twenty-two months to construct the arena; it was inaugurated in June 16, 1950, just one month before the famously climatic clash between Uruguay and Brazil in the World Cup Final. Attendance at that game is still the world record for a soccer match: 203,849 ticket holders. The second largest stadium in the world is also in Brazil, the Morumbi stadium of São Paulo, with a capacity of 148,000. The largest stadium in the United States, Pasadena’s Rose Bowl, ranks fifth in the world, holding 105,000 people.
